All About Etsy – Overview, Platform Perks & Etsy Origins

Etsy is a global online marketplace. It provides you with a platform to list homemade and creative products, as a third party seller, and allows Etsy to process orders for you. Much like Amazon and eBay.

Whilst YouTube was uploading its first video, in 2005 Rob Kalin, Chris Maguire, and Haim Schoppik set out to create an online marketplace dedicated to craftsmen – all from the comfort of their Brooklyn apartment.

Fast forward two years and Etsy was busy making it’s 1 millionth sale and celebrating nearly 450,000 users.

Maguire and Schoppik left the company in 2008, whilst Kalin went on to hire Chad Dickerson and removed himself from the day-to-day. Kalin was eventually replaced by Dickerson in 2011, who began to expand the company’s global reach, as well as its values – allowing manufactured goods to be sold on the site in 2013.

Today

Today, Etsy is a public company but still with the ethos to “keep commerce human“. The go-to marketplace for unique and creative products, they boast a community of 1.9m sellers, who connect with over 33.3m buyers looking for that special something from the 50m items for sale. Wow.
